The subject of obedience is one of those topics you feel you have heard enough on to last you a lifetime. Some of us began hearing it as part of kindergarten Sunday school. We were taught songs and rhymes on obeying our parents. We recited Ephesians 6:1 till we could recite it in our sleep. Decades later, we are still hearing about it. My, when will it ever stop?
Frankly, I don’t think it would. It is such a core teaching in the faith such that to stop hearing about obedience, you would either be dead or out of the faith.
I know you know all about it so i’m gonna skip to some main points today.
You may have come across some movies that exhibit royalty. I’m sure you have. Think back. The King always has servants who are at His beck and call. They appear at the flick of his fingers and disappear with fling of his hands. In those movies, you realize that the purpose of the servants and the subjects is to do the King’s bidding. Any sign of hesitancy or rebellion is frowned on and is punishable by death.
“Where the word of a king is, there is power; And who may say to him, “What are you doing?” He who keeps his command will experience nothing harmful; And a wise man’s heart discerns both time and judgment,”
Ecclesiastes 8:4-5 NKJV
God is our Father. He is our Friend. He is also our Lord, don’t forget that. It is on this premise that we recognize that we are His servants. Obedience to the King is akin to reverence and respect. You obey because you reverence Him. When the Lord tells you to do something, what is your response? Think back to the last time the Holy Spirit asked you to do something? Did you do it all? If you did, did you do it immediately or speedily or was it after much consideration? Did you seek for personal opinions of friends? I understand that that there may be a number of factors which may delay obedience including difficulty discerning whether that was the Lord or not. But I am talking about where you are sure this is the instruction of the Spirit.

Your answer to these questions will give you a fair idea as to whether you truly fear God. Listen. You can make excuses. You may not even Agree with me in this but the slightest hesitation exposes a deficit in reverence for God. Why? Going back to the previous example of royalty in movies. Do you ever see a servant hesitate or doubt the King? The King reigns supreme! His word is your command. If you can consider yourself as a servant, then you cannot ignore the King’s command.
The Apostle Paul often introduced himself as a bondservant of Christ. In other words, he was a slave to the King and so the King’s every word directed His life. Obeying God is a key element in your growth in the Lord. If He can trust you with little assignments such as giving a loaf of bread to a needy friend, He can entrust you with a non-profit organization.
Obedience initiates trust. In Kingdoms, some of the King’s most trusted people are faithful servants who bend backwards to please. They are entrusted with secrets of the Kingdom that will never be exposed. The fear of the Lord is truly the beginning of Wisdom & knowledge. Obedience is one way that exposes your fear or lack of it for the Lord.
Purpose in your heart to obey when instructed. You may not be very conversant with the voice of the Spirit of God. Yes, but think about it. Could you have come up with that yourself? Or would the devil tell you something of that sort that will bless you and others? The Lord is looking for faithful and obedient men who He can entrust His treasures with. Will you be the one?
