Everyone has that friend who is a picky eater or does not eat something not because they react to it or because they had a bad experience with it. They simply don’t eat some things because a parent does not eat it or an influential person in their life hates it. In my case, I wasn’t cooking with artificial seasonings such Maggi, Onga, monosodium and the like simply because my mum, the epitome of greatness in cooking, hates them. I had never worked with them to experience how they would impact the flavor of food. I didn’t really care about their function. All I knew was my mom said, “no spices, just add lots of onion with the right balance of garlic and ginger.” In fact, anyone who lived a long time on my mom’s meals found it difficult to eat other people’s meals packed with such seasonings because it was just ‘weird’.

Forgetting that she had decades of cooking experience on me, I went ahead and obediently adhered. No wonder my food usually came out bland. My friends encouraged me to use spices. They introduced me to various kinds but I was adamant. I was honoring my mother. I was sure that there definitely was a way without using such seasonings. After all, my mom did it everyday. The few times I was talked into using those seasonings, the food definitely improved. But nah, my Mom doesn’t cook like that. Haha. Of course, now my food is better. I rarely use such seasonings in my food but I also have discovered the beauty of other natural spices such thyme, basil, coriander and so on in food. I am still honoring my Mom in that respect. Every day I become more like her in making meals people enjoy.

In much the same way, our honor and respect we hold for God must be reflected in our opinions and decisions in situations. When there is reverence and awe for a personality, rarely do you find a challenge of His opinions and views. The one who you fear’s opinions become your opinions, His view on a subject becomes yours. You begin to see from His perspective.

“The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate.”

Proverbs 8:13 NKJV

A very significant nature of God is that God is Holy. My Pastor would say, “God is three times Holy.” He is not just Holy. He is Holy, Holy, Holy. Until we look at life from His three-time holiness, we will find some of His statutes to be too harsh. Many believers struggle with some facts of history such as the flood, the annihilation of nations by the nation of Israel as commanded by God, the destruction of some Israelites among other things. This struggle is not resolved because we tend to define holiness by our own terms. We define goodness and love by our own measures and so we find fault with God’s ways of looking at things and dealing with things. Understand this: God is the measure of true holiness, goodness and love. If your definition contradicts His actions then beloved, know that you are wrong.

In His Holiness, God hates sin. Period. He hates sin with a passion. Part of fearing God is to love what He loves and hate what He hates – sin and evil. Proverbs 8:13 states a few things the Lord hates including pride, arrogance, the evil way and a perverse mouth. Proverbs 6:16-19 also has a list of seven things God hates. In recent history, man is boldly waving the mutiny flag. We are boldly loving the things He has stated He hates. We really are rubbing it in His face. We have rebranded and renamed sins in our perversion calling pride and arrogance self-confidence, calling a perverse mouth freedom of expression. We have resorted to murder and calling it right to choose and perverse sexual relations as expressing yourself. Lord have mercy on us.

It should be well understood that the dangers of evil is what stirred God up to rescue us by the death of Christ. From God’s perspective, evil is so dangerous and destructive that it is worth risking Himself for so that we can be saved from that. If you begin to see from God’s perspective, evil will be an abomination to you. May we choose to have God’s opinions on issues. Undoubtedly, you will be found in the minority with that decision but let God be true and EVERY man a liar (Romans 3:4)!

Lastly, God hates sin but loves the sinner. A unique paradox but no less true. This is the whole of the gospel.

Quote of the week

”That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us— that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.”
