Welcome to the month of May! This month we’ll be going on a journey of faith and studying about certain essential elements as they relate to the concept of Faith. We begin with this first piece; an introduction to Faith.

“God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” Numbers 23:19 NKJV

The basic theme this scripture portrays is that God is not a man. This sounds like universal knowledge right? Yes but it’s not as simple as it seems. Let’s take a journey into man.

The composition of the being called man, is clearly stated in 1 Thessalonians 5:23. He is composed of a spirit compartment, a soul compartment and a body compartment. All these parts have roles and responsibilities. With the Spirit, He relates with the spiritual or unseen realm. The soul gives him consciousness or realization. It is the part of the man that gives meaning into things. The body of man was taken from the earth and hence, it is the only legal way for man to express himself on earth. The body of man limits his expression in other realms and hence man as a being is more sensitive to what he can see physically on the earth or what he can touch. So in 1 Samuel 16:7, the Bible makes it clear that, man is pleased by what is outward and physically tangible.

But our issue is not pleasing man but God. If He was a man, it would have been easier but unfortunately for us, He’s not. So what can please a God who cannot be pleased by a car, a big house, a laptop or even a favorite meal etc? The answer again is gotten from my favorite book; the Bible. Let’s look at Hebrews 11:6.

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6 NKJV

WHAT CAN PLEASE A GOD WHO IS NOT MAN?

The Bible answers it well; FAITH. Without this thing called FAITH, we cannot please this GOD that we serve. I think my next question would be WHAT IS FAITH? I know that’s yours as well hence our topic today.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 NKJV

The scripture above defines faith perfectly by mentioning some key things which I want us to look at.

Firstly, the word substance which in Greek is “hupostasis” which simply means a setting under like a support or foundation. The word of God is that substance. It is the foundation or support for the things we hope for from God. We cannot have faith apart from what God is saying.

The second is Evidence which simply means proof. If faith is an evidence to what we want from God, then there is no way we cannot receive it. An example is this, if someone goes for a loan from a bank, the person has to provide proof or an evidence that he would pay back the money. So the bank asks for collateral which has a higher value than the loan as an assurance that the said person would pay. Faith is that evidence.

People of God, without this Faith that I have simply explained, there is no way to please God, because He’s not a man that can be seen. Hence, we must have this faith to believe that He exists and can reward us who diligently seek HIM.

Quote of the week

”That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us— that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.”
